Here’s a good indicator I’m too frugal
I probably spend $50 yearly on clothing for myself. Maybe. My wife will occasionally buy me something, so let’s say the total amount spent on clothing for me is $150. Maybe I should up that because yesterday something happened to me that made me think I’m too frugal.
Yesterday I’m on the subway to work, minding my own business and reading my book. I cross my legs and catch a glimpse of something white on my blue pants. Upon closer inspection, I realize I have a rip in the knee of my pants because they’re so worn, they just split.
You know how clothes get after years of washing and wearing? That nice, soft feel. That was these pants all the way. I’d actually re-dyed them myself a while ago because the knees were so much lighter in color than the rest of the pants (I’ve found you do a lot of kneeling when you have a toddler).
I suppose if I was truly frugal, I’d get the pants patched. My wife, however, would never allow it. She’s frugal, just not that frugal.
Guess I should up the pants budget.

You know, I am with you - I am on a tough budget that doesn’t allow for much money to be spent on clothes, so I save up all year and spend most of my alloted clothes money after christmas, I figure with all the end of year sales I can get a whole lot more for the money…

If I have two similar pairs of pants with holes in them, I can cut material out of one of them to patch the other and get one good pair of pants out of those. I’ve been doing that for a while. Even my mother thinks I’m being ridiculous.
